Instruction

Lessons are conducted one-to-one in a friendly home studio in St. Ives (Huntingdon, Cambridgeshire). There are recording facilities available, and a large database of songs, music and learning resources.

Studies are flexible, and all levels of ability are catered for with a focus on each individual's particular musical interest and aspirations.

If required, lesson plans can also be arranged to follow the RGT graded syllabus in electric or acoustic guitar from beginner to advanced levels (standards set by the London College of Music).

Core subjects include:

  • Scales, arpeggios and their application
  • Chord knowledge and construction
  • Lead techniques (eg. string bending, slurs)
  • Improvisation
  • Ear training
  • Reading music notation (rhythm)
  • Rhythm styles

Supplementary subjects include:

  • Songwriting
  • Fingerstyle/hybrid picking
  • Advanced genre techniques (eg. tapping, bottleneck, chicken pick'n)
  • Effects and their application

Other services include:

Transcription
Music transcription service included, allowing you to learn the music you like even though the written music may not be available commercially. Instead of trying to learn from the many misleading and inaccurate tabs often found on the Web, why not work from tablature prepared by a teacher with nearly twenty years of ear-training and transcription experience?

Setup
A guitar setup service is available. Basic setups (neck adjustment, action and intonation) and electrical wiring repairs are offered from £30 upwards. Advice is also offered on guitar maintenance.

Buying Advice
Advice offered on choosing instruments, amps, effects etc.

Recording
Students may receive hands-on experience in recording music within the contexts of songwriting or improvisation.
